What a hotel category really means

A category is a pricing and quality band, not a promise of one named hotel across every departure. Final confirmation should state the actual hotel, or the clearly agreed equivalent standard, before you treat the accommodation as fixed.

Two hotels in the same broad category can still differ in room size, age, location, breakfast quality, parking, lift access, swimming pool, heritage character and distance from sightseeing areas.

Location can matter more than star language

In Jaipur, an Amer-side resort can be attractive but may be less convenient for repeated old-city visits. In Udaipur, an old-city lake property may have limited vehicle access. In Jaisalmer, a desert camp is not a substitute for a city hotel unless the itinerary clearly says so. In Ranthambore, distance from safari reporting points can affect very early starts.

When travelling with older guests, children or heavy luggage, ask about lift availability, steps, vehicle access and room proximity.

Compare the full room basis

Check whether the price assumes double/twin sharing, single occupancy, extra adult, child with bed, child without bed or infant. Also compare the meal plan, because a hotel-only room price and a breakfast-inclusive rate are not the same product.

For family rooms, do not assume every property can place the same number of adults and children in one room. Room occupancy is hotel-specific and must be confirmed.

Before you pay

Ask for the city-wise hotel list or agreed equivalent standard, room configuration, meal plan, check-in/check-out basis and any compulsory supplements that apply to your date. For heritage properties, clarify whether the room category shown in the quote is the actual room type being booked.
