City stay or desert stay
Jaisalmer Fort is a living urban quarter with homes, shops, temples, guesthouses and narrow lanes inside the historic walls. Patwon Ki Haveli, Nathmal Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haveli and Gadisar Lake add to the city experience. The dune/camp sector is outside the city and should be treated as a separate excursion or overnight stay.
If you want an overnight desert camp, decide whether you value sunset, cultural entertainment and a night outside the city enough to change hotels for one night. Travellers who dislike repeated packing can instead visit the dunes as an evening excursion and return to a city hotel.
How many nights to allow
Two nights is a sensible minimum for a first visit when you want both city heritage and the desert. Three nights or a 2+1 city/desert split works better if you want slower fort exploration, Kuldhara, Desert National Park-side experiences or a relaxed camp stay.
If you arrive from Jodhpur in the afternoon, keep the first evening light. Trying to complete the fort, havelis and a dune sunset on arrival day usually creates unnecessary rushing.
How to reach Jaisalmer
Rajasthan Tourism lists Jaisalmer as connected by road and rail and notes civil-airport connectivity. Flight schedules can vary by season and airline, so verify the exact date before building the trip around an air arrival.
Jodhpur is about 286 km away according to Rajasthan Tourism and is the most common western-Rajasthan gateway. Bikaner is about 330 km away. Both are substantial road sectors and should be treated as transfer blocks, not short local drives.
Desert camp and dune choices
Sam is the best-known dune sector and has the largest concentration of camps and visitor activity. Your choice should depend on whether you want a lively evening programme, quieter surroundings, a private camp experience or only a short dune visit. Ask exactly what is included: transfer, camel or jeep activity, dinner, cultural programme and overnight accommodation can be packaged differently.
Desert temperatures can fall sharply after sunset in cooler months. Carry an extra layer even when the daytime is warm.
Practical Jaisalmer tips
Inside the fort and older city lanes, walking is important and vehicle access is limited. Choose footwear accordingly. For desert excursions, confirm pickup point, driving distance, activity duration and return timing so your evening does not depend on vague “sunset safari” wording.
If you are travelling during a major festival or holiday period, reserve accommodation and desert activities earlier because supply can tighten quickly.
