Kerala Travel Guide
Kerala works best as a route of contrasting stays rather than a race through every famous name: Kochi for arrival and heritage, Munnar for hills, Thekkady for wildlife and spice country, Alappuzha for backwaters, Kovalam for the southern coast, and Wayanad for a separate northern nature circuit.

Choose the right Kerala route
For a first Kerala holiday of 5–7 nights, Kochi–Munnar–Thekkady–Alappuzha is the most practical core circuit because each stop adds a different experience without excessive backtracking. Add Kovalam when you want a beach ending and have enough nights for the longer southbound transfer. Treat Wayanad as a separate northern Kerala extension rather than squeezing it into the same short route.
A better Kerala itinerary usually has fewer hotel changes and more usable daylight. Two nights in a major stop often gives a better holiday than touching five destinations for one night each, especially when hill roads and city traffic make transfer days longer than a map suggests.
How many nights to allow
As a practical starting point, allow about 2 nights in Munnar, 1–2 in Thekkady, 1 night for an overnight Alappuzha houseboat or 2 nights if combining a resort stay, 1–2 nights in Kochi when heritage and food matter, and 2 nights in Kovalam or Wayanad when either is a main holiday focus.
Arrival and departure times matter. A late Kochi arrival followed by an early Munnar departure is not a Kochi sightseeing day, and a houseboat check-in day should not also be loaded with distant sightseeing before boarding.
Airports, rail and road planning
Kochi is the most useful gateway for the classic central Kerala circuit. Thiruvananthapuram works well for Kovalam and southern Kerala. Kozhikode is often more practical for Wayanad. Major railheads cover Kochi/Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, while Munnar, Thekkady and Wayanad require road transfers for the final leg.
For a multi-stop holiday, a private car is usually the simplest connection between hills, plantations and backwaters. Compare total door-to-door time rather than only kilometres, because mountain roads, town traffic and comfort breaks affect the actual day.
Backwaters, hills, wildlife or beach
If backwaters are the priority, protect the Alappuzha/Kuttanad block instead of treating it as a quick photo stop. If tea-country landscapes matter most, spend the extra night in Munnar. If wildlife and nature activities matter, check the current Periyar programme and timings before finalising Thekkady. If your goal is rest after touring, end in Kovalam rather than adding another sightseeing-heavy city.
Kerala is also a strong food and culture destination. Leaving some unscheduled evening time in Kochi, a plantation town or a coastal stay can be more rewarding than adding another long-distance attraction.
Weather and seasonal decisions
Kerala has a tropical climate, while hill destinations such as Munnar are noticeably cooler. Monsoon travel can be beautiful and green but can also affect outdoor activities, mountain visibility, trekking, road speeds and sea conditions. Build flexibility into nature-heavy days during wet periods.
Peak holiday dates can raise hotel and houseboat prices. For Christmas/New Year, Onam, long weekends and school-holiday periods, confirm accommodation and transport earlier than you would for an ordinary weekday itinerary.
Before you book
For houseboats, confirm whether the price is for day cruise or overnight stay, the exact boarding point, meal plan, air-conditioning arrangement, cruise hours and child policy. For hill resorts, check the actual road distance from the town centre or sightseeing route. For wildlife activities, use the current official operator or protected-area information rather than assuming every activity runs daily.
Keep one version of the itinerary that shows realistic transfer time, hotel area and inclusions. That makes it much easier to compare package options fairly instead of choosing only by headline price.
