Kerala Distance Chart & Travel Times
Use Kerala distances as a planning guide, not a promise of driving time. Hill roads, town traffic, meal stops, weather and hotel location can make the real transfer noticeably longer than a map estimate.

Core Kerala transfer pattern
| Sector | Planning range | What affects the day |
|---|---|---|
| Kochi → Munnar | About 4–5 hr | Hill climb, traffic, comfort/photo stops |
| Munnar → Thekkady | About 3–4 hr | Curving hill roads and plantation traffic |
| Thekkady → Alappuzha | About 4–5 hr | Descent to plains, town traffic, boat check-in deadline |
| Alappuzha → Kochi | About 1.5–2.5 hr | Urban traffic and exact hotel/airport location |
| Alappuzha → Kovalam | About 4–5.5 hr | Long coastal/urban road sector |
| Kozhikode → Wayanad | About 2.5–4 hr | Ghat climb, traffic and resort location |
Why kilometres are not enough
A 100 km hill-road journey can take longer than a much greater distance on a faster highway. Kerala itineraries should therefore be built around practical door-to-door time, not just the number displayed on a map.
Hotel location matters too. A plantation resort 20 km outside Munnar or a remote Wayanad property can add another hour to the day even though the destination name looks the same.
Protect fixed check-in times
Houseboat check-in is the most important fixed-time transfer in the classic circuit. On a Thekkady-to-Alappuzha day, leave enough margin so traffic or meal stops do not cause you to miss useful cruise time.
Flight and train departures are the other fixed deadlines. For early morning departures, consider spending the previous night closer to the gateway rather than trusting a long pre-dawn road transfer.
Best order for the classic circuit
Kochi → Munnar → Thekkady → Alappuzha is efficient because it limits backtracking. You can return to Kochi from Alappuzha or continue south toward Kovalam/Thiruvananthapuram when the trip is long enough.
Wayanad generally belongs in a northern Kerala plan through Kozhikode rather than being inserted into this central/southern circuit.
How to use this chart
Treat every time as a planning range. Confirm the latest route condition and expected travel time with your driver or local operator close to travel, especially during monsoon, road works, festival traffic or holiday peaks.
