Thekkady & Periyar Travel Guide

How much time to allow
One night works when Thekkady is a secondary stop, but two nights is better if nature activities are a main reason for visiting. Activity schedules can occupy fixed morning or afternoon windows, so an extra night reduces the risk that transfer timing forces you to skip the experience you came for.
Avoid promising a wildlife sighting. Periyar is a protected landscape and the value of the visit is the forest, lake, birdlife, plantation setting and organised nature activities.
Choose activities before finalising the day
Kerala Tourism lists boating, trekking, camping and other nature-focused experiences around Periyar. The available programme, reporting points, duration and operating rules can change, so decide what you actually want to do before filling the rest of the day.
If you choose an early nature activity, keep the previous evening relaxed. If you arrive from Munnar late in the day, do not assume you can still fit a major Periyar programme immediately.
Getting there
Thekkady is a road-transfer destination. Kerala Tourism identifies Kottayam as an important rail gateway and Kochi as a major airport option. In the standard holiday circuit, travellers commonly arrive by road from Munnar and continue toward Kottayam or Alappuzha.
The hill transfer has curves and changing road speeds. Plan around real driving time rather than a simple kilometre calculation.
Spice-country experience
The wider Thekkady area is known for spice plantations. If you book a plantation visit, check whether it is a guided educational walk, a farm visit attached to a shop, or simply a retail stop. The experience can be very different.
Buy spices because you like the quality and price, not because a tour schedule makes a shopping stop feel compulsory.
Practical packing
For forest-edge activities, use comfortable closed footwear, light layers, rain protection in wet weather, drinking water and sun protection. Follow protected-area rules and do not feed wildlife or leave litter.
If travelling with small children or older family members, check walking distance, steps and activity duration before paying for a nature programme.
